The Island
I have always lived by the sea. Until I was 11 I grew up in a small town called Shoreham-By-Sea on the south coast of the UK, before moving along the coast to Bournemouth. Aside from my time spent abroad or in London, I have never lived more than 10 minutes walk from the English Channel. I suppose this is one of the reasons I have always been so drawn to photographing water and the coast line. For this project I found myself wanting to discover more about the people and processes that make up the UK coastal industries, whether it be fisheries or boat sales, engineering or marine safety.
I feel that these images are especially interesting at a time when the UK Brexit debacle is still dragging on, and the geographic isolation of a small island trying its best to stay afloat during a global pandemic and polarised political views seems even more difficult. I hope these photos show the character, beauty and bizarreness of this little Island.
